Excursion to Mariazell

Himmelstreppe - An adventure also in winter

The trip to Mariazell - of course with the Zug' !

Sit on the right side in driving direction (here you have the better view)

Watch the path of Laubenbachmühle Winterbach:

• The train overcomes here in 2 huge serpentine 350 (!) Meters.

Gösingtunnel (2430 m long)

• Built in fabulous short period of one year and 200 days - by hand!
• Stand on the platform of the last car:
  • You see the bright spot after some time, perish (tunnel entrance) 'see;
  • Why: the highest spot of the tunnel is about in the middle

(So that the water can flow by 2 sides).

Ask the guard to the tines:

• A very rugged rock formation between stations Wienerbruck (by the lake) and Erlaufklause. * The teeth are out of the train to visit only with the "Hochalpin".

Cable car to the Bürgeralpe - Mariazell

Railway Station in Mariazell:

• The railway station is in St. Sebastian and not in Mariazell – therefore ...
• The walk to the Basilica (ca 1.6 km) goes away to the right

Around the Basilica:

• The monument of the builder of the Mariazell Railway is before the right stair.
• Behind the basilica is the Kerzlergrotte – Schatzkammer worth seeing
• On corner of Wiener street (has 2 levels) is the terrace coffee - very beautiful and interesting toilets on the 1st floor.

• In the Wiener street 4 doors down the brewery is Gierrer.
• Still further, the cable car (* summer 2002 is the chair lift near

the station because cable car will be renewed) on the Bürgeralpe (worth seeing is the Holzknechtland).

The special tip:

• ca. 6 minutes walk from the Basilica up the mountain is the mechanic crib mechanische Kripperl.
  • A must!!!!

Mariazell´s Surrounding

Erlaufsee / "Erlauf" lake:

• Crystal clear mountain lake about 3 km away from the station - other direction.
  

Possibility of hiking by Mitterbach to enter in the train there.

The Ötschergräben:

• The beautiful hiking trails in the nature park - ask us.
